Metalens Endoscope Design with Zemax, Lumerical, and Speos

Endoscopy enables minimally invasive optical imaging of internal organs, facilitating medical diagnostics, image-driven biopsy, and experimental surgery. One of the most critical parameters of endoscopes is their size, which poses main limitations on the clinical applications. Therefore, research and development aim for miniaturization since smaller and less rigid devices allow for higher agility and accessibility and induce less stress on the surrounding tissue. Fiber-optic endoscopes using metalenses provide promising alternative designs to conventional devices to significantly decrease the optics' size while maintaining similar image quality. However, accurate modeling and analysis of such instruments can be challenging due to the involved nano-scale metalens.

The Ansys Optics product suite enables an efficient metalens workflow, which can adapt to the design of nano-optic endoscopes. Recent improvements in this workflow allow more effective simulation of large metalenses and better interoperability between Zemax, Lumerical, and Speos.

What You Will Learn

In this webinar, we’ll demonstrate

  • How to design a metalens-based fiber-optic endoscope
  • The target phase profile of the metalens is optimized in Zemax OpticStudio using its powerful ray-tracing capabilities and optimization engine
  • The nano-scale physical structure of the metalens is accurately modeled in Lumerical
  • Speos evaluates the full system performance and visualize image acquisition in a realistic scene
