Merging Compliance with Safety

A holistic tool-based homologation approach for ADAS/AD

The complexity of modern AD systems, particularly the exploding validation burden due to the complexity of the open world, requires novel and more efficient approaches to safety validation and homologation with an increasing focus on virtual methods as a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to traditional physical testing. To meet homologation standards like UN ECE R157, safety standards like ISO 26262, ISO 21448, or upcoming ISO PAS 8800, dealing with the specifics of machine-learning algorithms in such AD functions, an integrated workflow with a blend of different safety-by-design and safety-by-validation approaches needs to be established.

Ansys and Kontrol will present a workflow that covers everything from safety analysis and real-world scenario acquisition to creating intricate digital models that replicate real-world conditions. These models enable regulatory compliance and safety testing of the AD stack, ultimately defining vehicle behavior and performance in a digital test bed.A highlight of the approach is the automated generation of pass/fail evaluators from formalized traffic legislation rules and hazard definitions. The qualified toolchain provides trustable physically accurate simulations, which can be integrated with simulation models of various sensing modalities such as LiDAR, radar, and cameras, providing the evidence required for the homologation and the safety case. The benefits of virtual homologation are elucidated, including reduced development costs, accelerated time-to-market, and enhanced safety through iterative testing in diverse scenarios.
