Exploring Biomaterials and their Uses with the Ansys Granta EduPack Software
Developing products for use on and in the body adds another layer of complexity when selecting materials for a design. Biomaterials are categorized as any matter, surface, or construct that interacts with biological systems. This ranges from bandages and contact lenses to stents and hip replacements. Understanding the needs of these biological systems and how this impacts biomaterials selection is critical to designing these products. The Bioengineering Level 2 and Level 3 databases in Ansys Granta EduPack™, a teaching software for materials education, have been designed to support teaching these concepts. Details of how the man-made and natural biomaterial records included in these databases, alongside more traditional engineering materials, enable material selection in bioengineering applications are included in this lecture.
