Digital Mission Engineering: Linking Engineering with the Mission for Accelerated Product Development and Less Design Risk

Today, complex products and systems are being developed for nearly every facet of society, from 5G infrastructure and smart cities to adaptive driving and aerospace. Their complicated nature requires taking into consideration competing design elements. That’s challenging enough, but it becomes even tougher when there is little, if any, coordination between the teams working on those features, which is often the case.

What’s more, there are often opposing pressures for engineers to balance. Delivering complexity isn’t sufficient; it also has to be done against shrinking timetables.

As designs become more complex, of course, there are more things that can go wrong. This means validation becomes more time-consuming and difficult.

Digital mission engineering is the use of digital modeling, simulation, and analysis to incorporate the operational environment and evaluate mission outcomes and effectiveness at every phase of the life cycle. It provides a foundation on which you can integrate digital mission and system models to develop a true engineering analysis environment that measures mission effectiveness and defines outcomes across all levels of fidelity.

Adding new mission models or adjusting existing ones is done in real-time, reducing risk and accelerating product development.

All these steps appear linear, but the real power of a solution like digital mission engineering is that they’re cyclical, working across disciplines
