Exploring Materials and Shape using the Ansys Granta EduPack Software
A material’s shape can dramatically impact material choice in design. Structural sections, such as I-beams, are one such example of the influence shape can have. This lecture serves to introduce the idea of “material shape” and its role during materials selection. Examples of common shapes, their loading conditions, shape-related mechanical properties, and shape factors are shown. This information can be used within the structural sections data-table of the Built Environment database in Ansys Granta EduPack™, a teaching software for materials education, for overview and selection. A case study utilizing the information from this lecture, focusing on sustainability in the built environment, is linked below.
