Focus on Lasers: Simulating Self-Heating Effects

In this webinar, we will present a new extension to our travelling wave laser model (TWLM) in Lumerical INTERCONNECT that enables laser simulation with self-heating. This provides users with a unique solution that offers physical insights into the laser self-heating capabilities built into the popular TWLM platform. Together with our existing workflow for isothermal simulations, this enables the simulation of both the pulsed and continuous wave regimes. This is accomplished using our tools for optical mode (FDE/FEEM), gain (MQW), and laser simulation (INTERCONNECT).  The webinar will provide technical details about how the model was incorporated into TWLM and a practical demonstration of the model in use.

Attendees will learn the following:

  1.  A brief overview of Ansys’ laser tools and the workflow for isothermal simulation
  2. How we enabled the use of both Lorentzian and arbitrary sampled gain spectrum as a function of frequency, carrier density, and temperature
  3. How we coupled the heat equation and the rest of TWLM to enable efficient calculations of LI curves with power roll-off due to self-heating in INTERCONNECT
  4. Practical use of the new model via a demonstration of a AlGaInAs/InP ridge waveguide edge emitting laser with a comparison of our simulation results with measurements as well as with physical laser simulations
