Overview
Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS) has employed Ansys ModelCenter software to develop numerous conceptual aircraft multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO) workflows for many years. Each workflow integrates many discipline-specific analysis tools to make one cohesive analysis tailored to the problem.
Although it seems complicated, the essence of MDAO is simple. It instructs the computer to interact with design and analysis programs/codes/tools such that the execution of each tool is automated. It is then a matter of coordinating the inputs and outputs of these tools to “talk to each other,” similar to what would be done manually. However, it is through this automation and coordination that gives MDAO powerful capabilities that easily dwarf manual processes. However, MDAO is not a panacea but a complementary process to more traditional manual approaches in aircraft design.
With that perspective in mind, we’ll provide a high-level overview of MDAO, including what it is, building up from the basics of tool inputs/outputs integration and concluding with an application example and summary. What attendees will learn
