CHT for Steady and Transient Applications

The design process of hot components of powertrain systems undergoes significant scrutiny due to pressing requirements to achieve higher levels of thermal efficiency, power output, reliability and service life. 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can provide comprehensive insight into the temperature distribution within such systems and, as a result, become fundamental to any such design process. Conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulations, which involve both fluid and solid domains within a CFD calculation, come with their own set of complications. This includes the solver's capability for handling and connecting thermal information between fluids and solids, as well as the workflow’s capacity to handle different thermal inertias.

Ansys Fluent provides a robust and accurate solver for evaluating a wide variety of CHT problems, involving complex shapes, huge mesh counts and significantly different thermal properties. For problems that require transient CHT simulations — for example, IC engines or large eddy simulations (LES) of gas turbine combustors — different Fluent-based workflows have been developed and validated over time. As a part of this webinar, all of these workflows and the Ansys solution for the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) will be discussed.
