Electric Machines
Thermal Management
in Ansys Fluent

Course Overview

This course teaches thermal simulation methodologies applied to electric machines, including e-motors, generators, and electric gearboxes. Lectures and workshops cover every aspect of e-motor CFD simulations, including working with CAD models in Ansys SpaceClaim, creating high quality CFD meshes with Ansys Fluent Meshing, and all aspects of performing thermal CFD simulations in Ansys Fluent. Course Sessions 01 through 04 are organized into geometry (Ansys SpaceClaim), meshing (Fluent Meshing) and solver (Ansys Fluent) topics. For each of these three topics students go through focused hands-on workshops. Solver topics are further divided into a) indirect-cooling methods in Session 03 (i.e., air cooled, and water jacket cooled) and b) direct-cooling methods in Session 04 (i.e., an oil coolant is in direct contact with heat producing parts such as end winding and rotor) that requires use of multiphase CFD models.

Prerequisites

  • Training is focused on e-motor thermal management using Ansys Fluent and will utilize tools such as Ansys SpaceClaim and Ansys Fluent. Prior basic knowledge of Ansys SpaceClaim, Fluent Meshing and Fluent solver is required.

Teaching Method

Lectures and computer practical sessions to validate acquired knowledge. A major emphasis is placed on teaching though theory lectures, discussions, and hands-on workshops.

Learning Outcome

Following completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the end-to-end procedure of e-motor thermal analysis using Ansys Fluent.
  • Learn e-motor geometry preparation process using Ansys SpaceClaim.
  • Learn how to create high quality CFD meshes with Ansys Fluent Meshing.
  • Learn how to perform the air-cooled/water jacket-cooled (indirect method) e-motor thermal analysis with Ansys Fluent using a Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) model.
  • Learn how to perform the oil cooled (direct method) e-motor thermal analysis with Ansys Fluent.
