Introduction to Mechanical (Thermal) in Ansys
Electronics Desktop

Course Overview

Mechanical (Thermal) in Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT) provides a fast and efficient solution for thermal conduction only simulations in electronic design applications. The primary goal of this course is to cover the basics of working in the Mechanical (Thermal) user environment Electrical Engineers and Designers who wish to perform a quick and efficient thermal conduction only analysis for their designs with minimum mesh and solve setup time, without resorting to a complete flow and conjugate heat transfer solution from Icepak would highly benefit from this course. However, Thermal or Mechanical Engineers having similar requirements would also find this course useful.

Students will be introduced to the basics of FEM-based thermal conduction only solutions through a combination of lectures and workshops and examples/demonstrations. The lectures and examples/demos are covered during the online sessions while the workshops are to be completed independently between online sessions. The online sessions include ample Q&A time to discuss questions, comments and feedback related to the workshops.

Prerequisites

  • A technical education and background in fluid mechanics and heat transfer is recommended but an engineering degree is not required.
  • This course is designed for users who have little to no experience with Mechanical (Thermal) in AEDT.

Teaching Method

Lectures and computer practical sessions to validate acquired knowledge.

Learning Outcome

Following completion of this course, you will be familiar with:

  • Overall Capabilities of Mechanical (Thermal) in Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT).
  • Steps to create/import geometry in Mechanical (Thermal).
  • Inputs and boundary conditions required to perform a thermal conduction-only simulation.
  • Best practices for model building, meshing, solving, and checking the results.
  • Multiphysics workflows by coupling Mechanical (Thermal) with other Electromagnetic tools like HFSS and Maxwell within the AEDT environment.
