Materials Selection Exercises using the Ansys Granta EduPack Software

The Ashby Selection Methodology, or the idea of breaking down the design process into a function, objective and constraints and the screening stages to select materials for engineering and design applications, is well known. This exercise set provides the opportunity to explore all aspects of the Ashby Selection Methodology using Ansys Granta EduPack™, a teaching software for materials education. This resource contains a set of 71 exercises focused on Materials selection teaching. Topics covered include: the design process, translating design requirements into constraints and objectives, and how to use those objectives in materials selection. Some advanced cases are also included.

Learning Outcomes

  • Knowledge and understanding of the design process using Material Indices
  • Ability to use Granta EduPack to apply screening and ranking to material properties
  • Appreciation of design-led decision-making using Granta EduPack tools
