Materials Selection for a Chainsaw with Ansys Granta EduPack Software
For many products, mechanical performance is important and must be considered during their design. But other factors, such as cost, weight, and corrosion resistance must not be ignored. This can lead materials engineers and designers to consider mateirals such as polymers or composites in applications where metals traditionally shine. In this case study, we explore the challenge of selecting materials for a lightweight chainsaw blade. Stiffness-limited design performance indices are derived and multiple material families using Ansys Granta EduPack™, a teaching software for materials education, are considered to ensure compliance with durability and cost considerations.
