Level 3 Industrial Case Study: Electric Cars-Sustainability and Eco Design
The aim of this resource is to support advanced teaching of materials selection where real-life applications are desirable. In this advanced industrial case study, we have studied the sustainability and eco design of electric cars. Electric vehicles are currently experiencing a surge in interest because of their potential to reduce pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and running costs, while retaining high performance. Here, we compare different powertrains using the Eco Audit tool, and explore the use of critical materials in batteries and electric motors. The electric and magnetic performances for the most popular types are visualized to understand the design.
