Coal

Though coal utilization varies in different parts of the world, the fuel is, and will remain, an integral part of the global energy mix, primarily for power generation. In the United States, coal-fired thermal generation represents almost half of total electricity production. Due to its broad availability and low cost, coal is an important source of energy for many other countries around the globe.

While there are environmental concerns about the emissions produced by this fossil fuel — reflected in more-stringent legislative standards — coal producers and utility companies are continually working to use advanced pollution control devices to address these issues. Organizations are also designing new ways to transform coal into diversified products, such as synthesis gas, and to develop a new generation of power plants.
